  • WEB AS AN ARTISTIC PLATFORM
  • SPRING 2012
  • Html Bio
  • For this first assignment, students were given the challenge to create a biographical text-based web page inspired by Heath Bunting's _readme.html. Using the basic html coding we learned in class and through an online tutorial, I fashioned my site around the concept of biological coding.
  • Natalie Bookchin Presentation
  • I was assigned early in the term to present on Natalie Bookchin to the class. This presentation, which had to be in the form of a website, highlights Bookchin's life and her work as a net artist.
  • Reading Reflection
  • For this assignment, I wrote a one-page html document in response to "Chapter 1 Early Internet Art" from Rachel Green's Internet Art using BBedit and an external style sheet.
  • Reading Reflection Revision
  • Students were asked to revise the one page response using the latest elements (div and span selectors, etc.) discussed in class and in the online tutorial assigned for homework. This is my revision.
  • Proposal for Final Project
  • Drafting an idea for my final project, I produced a description of my idea along side images that demonstrated what I expected the final project to look like.
  • Wordpress Sample
  • Using the style child theme, I attempted to generate a wordPress that had looked and felt like their main website.
  • Javascript Sample
  • Inspired by my friends relationships, I practiced applying my new understanding of javascript to create a simple page that uses the JavaScript OnMouseOver event with an image.
  • Final Project
  • Desiring to create an interactive page that educates the public about science, I created a website that explored the growth of cancer in an abstract, yet poignant manner though simple use of divs and rollover. Please view on Safari.
  • WEB DESIGN
  • SUMMER 2009
  • Creative Analysis
  • In this course, students had to redesign a website within a chosen industry. After deciding to work with The Maryland Zoo's website, the first assignment was generate an analysis of six competitive sites within the zoo/aquarium industry. This was accomplished by using the recently developed skills in Adobe Illustrator.
  • Creative Strategy
  • In this assignment, students had to author a creative brief for their newly proposed site. This document had to summarize the overall visual and conceptual goals for the site, identify the target audience, propose visual and brand styles as well as any executional considerations.
  • Site Map
  • Using MindManager, students were to produce a site map of the current taxonomy of their selected website. The objective of this assignment was to dissect the site's current functionality and consider ways in which it could be improved upon.
  • Wireframe Samples
  • I used Adobe Illustrator to create wireframes/schematics of how we envisioned our revised homepage structure appearing, while incorporating concepts learned through readings about site structure and flow.
  • Mood Boards
  • Drawing from stock photography/illustration, objects, colors, icons, type, etc., students developed two mood boards, one for portraying the feel of the current site (first page of document) and one for their proposed site redesign (second page of document). This was the final step of the web design process before finalizing my homepages' designs
  • Practicing Flash
  • Moving away from redesigning a professional website, students were taught the basics of Adobe Flash. I used these skills attained in class to produce my own personal websites.
  • Mock Homepages
  • For the final assignment, students integrated and utilized all the materials that they developed over the course and generated two alternative homepage concepts based on strategy, architecture and brand on Adobe Photoshop. One of these designs had to be accompanied by a simple two page style guide detailing typefaces, colors, links and other vital information for a smooth handoff. My personal objective was to create two designs with very different feels. The first design was to be exciting and user-friendly for all ages; to accomplish this goal, I integrated a talking frog to help younger audiences navigate the site. The second homepage was designed to be for more sophisticated audiences and specifically marketed towards donors. The motivation behind this alternative layout was based on my background research, which stated that the zoo was experiencing a financial crisis. For both homepages, I stressed the importance of the educational experience that could be obtained at their zoo.
